Adult male GT average size?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have seen a 11 incher at an lfs. It was the biggest GT I've ever seen. Its babe was around 7-8". The previous owner had them for around 5years, before getting tired of them.

At 10-12 months and at that size I would say you already know what to feed it to maximize growth! Nice job and nice fish. I have one that I bought last Sept. at around 3.5" and he's about 8" now. I feed mainly Hikari cichlid gold. He also gets some market shrimp and tilapia meant for the pleco.
Here's a pic from a couple of months ago. He's only grown in length a little but seems to be filling out in height the last couple of months.

Wow awesome terror! I feed mine a very varied diet. Kens fish growth pellets, kens veggie pleco pellets, JMC catfish food, algea wafars, king british cichlid sticks, Kens African cichlid attack pellets , kens spirulina pellets , Nutrafin predator sticks, Kens Krill, Bloodworm, cockels, mussels, Lance fish, some occasional neon tetra or danio.

I never let him get full .Small and often is how I feed him. I Love your GT man!

BTW is your fish prepared for showtank?
More than size, characteristics like shape, color, hump, finnage, attitude, etc are considered.
I have seen professionals preparing fish for months for a show. They take a lot of fish, around 6-8atleast, grow them out a little, then pick out the very perfect ones and concentrate on them, giving each 10-30g tank depending on size of the fish. They do water changes daily, feed the best stuff, train them to be bold with people around, more than just bold they should have attitude, the fish should flare back at people.

They do all sorts of things to make a show fish, yet some people get gifted/blessed with spectacular specimen without all the hardwork, right in their community tank.

In the end am sorry to say, your fish is good, but not good enough as a show specimen. Here re a couple of examples how show fish should be....
The belong to MFK members, and i hope they dont mind me showing them here...

Average I've seen are 8-9". Very few 10 inchers and even fewer over.

11" plus - only reference is 2-3" lava rock

9" plus - only reference is heater in back

Go for it. You gotta start somewhere. Do get it used to whatever tank it will be displayed in and get it used to traffic. Hope you do well, if not, then at least you'll learn more about what you need to do to be successful.

Get some head on that thing before the show and you should be good to go!

Despite the quality of my pics MY GT has much more intense colours then he appears, Is not much different then the 9 incher in the Vid in real life, it's just a real poor camera. He always flares when approached, I don't expect to win I just want to experience a fish show! Besides i'm in Ireland not many CA/SA keepers here. So the competition won't be as strong. I'll be mainly competing against Discus, Rams and angelfish. The winner will be a discus, always is at these shows in Ireland. Thanks for the info, any tips on feeding for growth/colour?

I started with 10, He was the best so I kept him. Thanks man for the honesty and frankness!
;) I have 50 euro to go buy some fish food, any recommendations?
