adv./disadv. to a barebottom tank

gravel also displaces alot of water a 55 gal tank full of gravel usually only holds 50 gal of water or less
 
advantage is you can see the waste and leftover food you need to clean, disadvantage is it's ugly

I am slowly pulling the gravel out of my 90 gallon bichir tank. Mostly because I do not want them eating the gravel.... My Q tank and my Oscar tank are bare bottom and all I have to do is net the oscars poo it makes messy fish easier to keep. Also bare bottom the waste seems to find its way to your filters a lot easier without getting caught in the substrate.
 
personal choice I think. I like the look of both. Gravel, for me, makes tanks look more natural. Sand is the ultimate, but its hard on filters, as been my experience. The only fish i'd go bare bottom with these days are those notoriously sensitive to water quality, like Discus.
