Advice for a newbie

start by planting the whole tank imo eco complete is the best all around substrate to start out a new planter..... i like pennywort moneywort amazonsword and java moss/fern throughout the tank theese plants all grow like weeds..... also use driftwood throughout to soften the water.... discus like still water so a sponge filter is a good way to go... in a 55 gallon you might do 2 big sponges on a air pump... german rams or the ramirezii are good tank mates in a 55 i would go with 3 discus and maybe 3-5 rams get you water around 6.8-7.0 and keep it there their diet and your water changes are the most important things

2 discus max in a 55 i would say... but you got to keep the water super clean and this is defiantly not a noob fish.... try a shoal of neon tetras like 55 and if 45 survive for a month then you may be ready for discus...planted tank is the way to go for discus and use eco complete for planted tanks it works great with canister filter as well no HOB because you dont want surface water movement cause you want to keep co2 in the water.... good luck make sure you cycle or else your going to get New tank syndrome.... that was my first noob mistake

ya he isnt a noob, this is just his 1st tank, he has help me with my fish for about 2 years now and that all we talk about, we where in the service to gether, he is noob to his 1st tank, it will be fine for now since you are geting smaller dicus. and ill help you get everything setup. but start maken room for a bigger tank bc when they will get to big for the 55gal soon, or you can just keep them at my house when they 2 big lol.
