Planted tanks look great. I wanted to avoid C02 and am afraid the fish uproot the plants.

If you saw Harleyk's tank on the link, he doesn't use C02 at all.

Just tryna help. I don't do planted myself but just thought i'd show proof that it can be done. Also, piranhas will adjust to light. I got mine about the size of a quarter, light would make them freak out. I would use it to break up fights. 3 weeks ago (had them a year now) i turn it on and it doesn't phase them. Left it on. didn't bother them. Been turning it on regularly ever since so i can view the tank at night

there are many beautiful planted piranha tanks so it can be done. as mentioned piranhas will get use to the light so don't worry too much or you can go with low light plants like swords, java ferns, java moss, etc. plant the tank and let the plants develop in the tank first before you add the p's. floating plants can be difficult with wet/dry cuz of the overflow but if you can find a way of securing them it would look sweet.
here are two links to two of the most beautiful planted piranha tanks I've seen.

if you go with pygos then i would start with about 8-10 then down size over time if needed, 6 adult would be comfortable in there in the long run. but if you have plant with bigger tank in the near future for a monster shoal then you can stock both tanks with similar number then move them all to a larger tank. they grow fast for the first 6 months, should get to about 6-7" the slow down. in 1 year they should be around 7-8" some may be bigger, depends on water quality, food and genetics of the fish.

just to add, make sure your filter is going at the rate of 10x per hour of the tank size. So 120 gallon tank should have at least 1000 GPH filteration/hr if you are planning on keeping a full stock of red bellies in there (recommended by most piranha keepers at piranha-fury.com). like the other member said earlier in the post, you can probably start with 8-10, they will eventually trim down to 6 or 7 adults.

Also if you want to make them more comfortable, adding driftwoods wouldnt hurt. The woods will give out a slight brown tint to imitate the amazon. Make them more comfortable to the environment.

As far as your UV sterilizer filter question, you can add a canister filter and put the UV sterilizer on the return hose of the filter. This way cleaner filtered water will go through UV light case instead of dirty water. Keep in mind that your UV light will have to be replaced periodically.
