Advice/Ideas for a 135 gallon tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They have only had him since Wednesday, so about 4 days...he hasn't been eating for them yet. I'm starting to volunteer at this lfs so I am going to keep an eye on him until my tank is set up and cycled, I get to pick it up on Thursday ^_^.
And yes, I expect to have to do a lot of water changes thanks for the tip on that :)
What are suitable tank mates for a fire eel? this is another question that constantly gets contradicted...

anything large enough not to be eaten ( though rarely do they eat other fish fish) .. and nothing aggressive. though my fires more or less break this rule, part of this imo is i keep a small group. Large community fish are ideal. atm mine are with 2 florida gar, 2 pike cichlids, and a Royal pleco. all of which are questionable at best tank-mates. The eels where in the tank first, it works for me.. but in this I def say "do as I say, not as I do." I had my eels approx 1 yr before doing this so I was aware of their natural inclinations, ect.

personally i would go with a nice school of Denisoni barbs.. though somewhat expensive they are large schooling fish and would fit the bill well. Opposed to going with some large fish.. schooling fish will encourage the eel to come out.

Make sure the tank is fully cycled. I would highly reccomend a fish-less cycle.

denisoni barbs are on the top of the list of fish I've been considering. But don't they like cooler temperatures better? I was also considering some of the larger types of rainbow fish. I also like the black ghost knife and sengal bichir and ropefish, would one of them work (with the ropefish I'm doubtful)? whats the min. size for a fish not to get eaten by an full size eel?...I'm still deciding if I want a bunch of 'smaller' community fish or only a couple big fish. What kinds of bigger fish would work? I like the idea of the bigger fish having personalities. Are there any specific types of more peaceful cichlids that would work?

I keep 2 senegals with my tire track.. they're pretty chill imo would be fine.. rope fish should be fine as well though those guys do appreciate company so get more then 1 ideally. BGK's seem to be hit or miss for compatability. imo since they eat the same foods and share the same bottom space not ideal. rainbows would liekly work fantasic as well. not sure about teh temps.. but i keep my fires 72-80 and it has dropped to about 68 w/out issues with my eels.

They are nippy...

I've only seen them nippy if you get only a few.. like tiger barbs.. not enough of a school and they become aggressive. but I doubt the denisoni would bother a fire eel enough to do any damage if they did, and it woudl be fairly obviouse. we kept a decient sized school at work with a BGK for a few weeks w/out any issues.

was pondering peaceful cichlids and Uaru came to mind. haven't had much dealings with them but I've heard only positives about how gentle these guys are. Otherwise Discus or angels would liekly be fine as well.

these guys are native to SE Asia. so you may also search into some compatable tank-mates native to them.

thats a good idea I'll look into it...ironically the tank im getting comes with two severums and 1 uaru...i had thought about maybe keeping them instead of donating them to the lfs, but the severums have beaten the crap out of the poor uaru, who is now in pretty rough shape. So i was worried that they would beat up my eel as they are a proven pair.

I have found mixed results on the forums with oscars....what do you think? if I got a 4-5" oscar and raised it with a foot long fire eel? would it be more likely to get along with the eel if it grew up with it? alot of sites say they are peaceful as long as the fish isnt small and are mostly only aggressive with their own species....

it might be ok but oscar are very messy...

ime.. no no no to the Oscar... I tried it.. and he constantly harassed my eels makeing them skittish and always hideing. He was raised with the eels as well, once he started matureing he got aggressive. and if the severums are a pair.. I would not put an eel with them. But the Uaru shoudl be fine.
