if you are just starting avoid corals go with the groupers and and triggers as most of them can handle the cycling of the tank you could probably use 5 or 6 panther groupers to cycle the tank have them survive and have good looking fish from day one look for triggers from the red sea they have better colors the Red Sea ****** triggers get red teeth
honestly im not keen on cycling a tank with fish(s) id rather use something that it cant hurt. id probably be most keen on using that cycling process with the raw shrimp. but as for stocking with red triggers in the end, where can i find them? any reputable site sell them?
is there a big difference between hanging protein skimmers and in sump protein skimmers? and is there anything wrong with using the hanging protein skimmers on the side of the sump?
My in sump protein skimmer is larger than my hang on skimmer. Both are AquaC Skimmers. If it is your sump, you don't have to worry about it ever overflowing. My in sump skimmer is for the 200g tank and the hang on skimmer is for the 130g tank. Both are mainly FOWLR with a few hardy corals (mostly mushrooms and a few leathers). The fish seem to eat everything else.
I haven't used a UV sterilizer on the sw tanks and have had no diseases (that I am aware of). I used one on my larger (320g) fw tank when I first set it up as it was the only way I could get rid of an algae bloom. That was several years ago and I haven't used it since. They are a good way to keep a tank looking clearer though.

thank you! i apprecaite the good info. so im guessing if i get a big enough in sump protein skimmer i should be good depending on the fish choices i make. any other idea on how to set up the sump? the only other advice i recieved was to do about a foot of foam minimum. an area of live sand. a water trickle over bio balls. and some macro algae. this sound appropriate? or am i going in the complete wrong direction here?
how important is an RO/DI system for this kind of setup? is there any other way to clean out my water? or would decholinating chemicals be a better way to go? any other more effecient ways?
also about how much rock/sand do i need? and is there any kind of porous rock that i can use as dead rock? ive been told that i can use lava rock with a little bit of live rock mixed in to seed the lava, is this feasable? i keep hearing that a good rule of thumb is one pound to one gallon. if i can seed the lava rock with live rock, then what woul the ratio be for live to "dead"
Lava rock would work but is not as good as getting dead LR or search DIY Live Rock and you can make your own. Garf. something has some really good tanks made from nothing but DIY LR and coral frags. just to get an idea how good it can look. That can save you alot of money but requires a lot of patience and planning to do. The benefit is you can make some nice base rock in the exact shape you want to fit your tank.
