Advice on A monitor

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
monitors are for experianced owners only. they get way to big and aggressive( some) for a nube. i would suggest a beardy. there easy, curious, smart, attentive, and sociol animals.theyl get a good 2' olso.

we keep talking about size and such. What are the ackies requirements that make them so hard?Just curious, other than the price, how are they harder than a BD?

From what I've read/been told they're not hard, generally when somebody says they're thinking of getting into monitors the suggestion is always ackies (not an option when I was getting into them). I think the downside to an ackie as a beginner herp is they're pretty expensive; if you screw up it's pretty costly.

They are also less pratical for a normal house hold because they need a almost 100% bug diet , lots of it and very varied, with the ocasinal pinkie or fuzie. Beards as adulds need lots of veggies as well as insects, so being the diet about 50 /50 less bugs in the house:D

Monitors are not any harder to keep than any other herp. The only thing they require is more space for the larger species. Yes they are strictly carnivorous, but so are most gecko species. If youre into monitors Id say just get one according to the care you are willing to give, enclosure size being the most important factor. Make sure you research max size, diet, etc... then figure out if you can provide those resources. If you have any questions please feel free to pm me ill be more than happy to help.

Make sense since varanids have a higher base metabolism... kinda like how colubrids need more "roaming" room than boids or why teiids need bigger enclosures than scincids of the same size.
