I'm currently using a Marineland Canister 530 and it's great but I'm also looking to do a secondary filter for 2 main reasons.

1. So that I can keep it running on existing tank and when I need to use 10 gallon quarantine tank I can simply move it over and add water to the tank for instant setup. Also having an extra filter certainly would not hurt the existing crystal water so it would be a nice added water polisher.

2. Even though 530 GPH is nice, I read that it should be closer to 10 times the Tank volume, so I would need 750 GPH. There are some filters that can give me the extra 220 but wouldn't 220 be too much for a 10 gallon when I have to switch it ?

What do you recommend ?

Another canister filter would be a neat idea, it has the quick disconnect valve for easy re-location, more expensive though. HOB's are cheaper and simpler but I also dread the idea of having to buy new a new filter cartridge.

If you want to polish the water get a hot magnum 250 which will also work for the QT tank. You can also get the AquaClear HOB (50 or 70 is the right size for the QT tank) which does not use cartridge. It's only use a sponge which will last a long time, you only have to rinse it. You can also fill it up with cotton fiber from Walmart.

I've got a ac70 running on my 56 and two emp400's running on my 72. I'd be a little worried about them being too much for a 10 gallon quarentine though haha. they are both amazing filters though. maybe look at running a simple sponge filter on your 75gallon then switching it too the 10gallon if you need it. a sponge filter will easily keep water conditions in a 10gallon perfect

Ac70 would b perfect. No expensive cartridges and you can fill with what you need. Add more mech or bio or chemical if you need.

go with the sponge filter on a small powerhead ,or if you already have an air pump that will work. sponge filters= GREAT biofiltration

The hot magnum 250 is rated for 50 gallon, one thing I noticed with some of these hob canister type filters is the hang on apparatus does not usually fit 75 gallon. It's made for smaller type tanks where the top of the tank is thin. On the 75 it's about 1 inch wide, so would need something that could fit that. I'm not sure how wide the hot magnum hanging apparatus is. I like the idea of a hob vs sponge. I'm not completely sold on the sponge filter concept, not to mention having to clean it often.

At some point in the future, I can see myself getting an additional Marineland c-530, one on each end, that would create an even better water flow for the 75.

I got this one mini rapids hob canister filter rated up to 20 gallons (80 gph), but its too small to hang on the 75. I wonder if there's a way to make it fit.
