Advice on Buying First Piranhas

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I need to have a cooler, Fishes 33, because the outside temperature in Dubai can go upto 50 degrees centigrade in the summer, that is if I am keeping them outside (If I get a 40 gallon I would not have to keep it outside) and I also don't like the Rhom, sorry, I think the red belly looks far better. Tango 374, you are trying to say that there are 3 types of red belly piranhas (if so can you please show me the different types of rbp?)? I am only going to keep them in a 10 gallon for a month or I might even move them straight into the 40 gallon that I am going to buy (If I can get it made and delivered before I buy them). If my jars will "never" get along then I can probably sell 1 of them (If I sell one jardini then I can remove the partition and the other can have more space to swim) and my 5 inch Pacus to earn some money to fund the rbp (tank, extra filter etc.); something tells me that if sell my jardini at only 7 inches I would make a lot less money than if I sold it at 10 or 12 inches so i am not sure whether I should sell one of them now. I'll probably get 2 rbp, a male and a female. I will get the 40 gallon custom made in a glass shop so can someone please tell me anything I should try to get done when I give the order? The max I can get for the house is:
Height= 52 cm
Width=23 cm
Length= 93 cm
It is going to be kept on a window ledge, so the rbps are going to get all the cover they need with backing paper on the tank and a curtain covering it from people in the room. What exactly is important for the rbp? Length, Height or Width?

NO! there is 1 RED bellies piranha....However there is 4 different pygo species. ( Red bellies, Ternetzi, Caribe and piraya)

I would wait until you get a big tank then get the red bellies.

You can not tell rather it's male for female by looking at the piranha. "IF" you have a breeding pair female will have larger stomach and bigger body the male. Other then that you can't tell.

I wouldn't put any curtain covering from people. It's best for them to see and get use to people. So they are not shy, can eat in front of you, also can train them how to be aggressive toward people when they get near the tank.

Keep the enviorment look natural and amazonish look. Gravel, rock, live plants, and wood...keep the temp 76-82f,

feed them variety different food every week. best to train them we young so that won't be so picky when they get big.
feed them
raw shrimp
silver side
smelt
pellets
white meat fillets
worm
clams
scallops

I Just some of the other threads and they said 4 rbps is an ideal number (for breeding, getting along) I am also most probably buying them at 3 and 1/2 inches so what do your'll think, should I aim for buying 4 piranhas (assuming that the biggest tank I can get for the next year is a 40 gallon and that I will most probably put them in the 10 gallon for more than a week)?

Can you identify the gender by looking at them when they are 3 and 1/2 inches?

NO!....reb bellies will not be mature enough to breed until they get to 8" + for 8month old (I think)..would won't be able to breed in your 40gallon. it's to small for 3-4 piranha. It can hold them for a while but not for long. red bellies grow very fast. in a few month it will out grow 40gallon.

it's easy way to get a group 5+ and pick out the breeding pair in large tank.

ok, so then I should just stick with 2, my objective of identifying the gender was just so that they wont kill each other because there are only 2 ( which is supposedly not a good idea). When will 2 rbp outgrow a 40 gallon?

I am definitely giving one of my jars away because I removed my partition after 2 months today and they still fought( not as bad as before), but im just sick and tired of this so I can exchange it for the piranhas and pay the balance (7 inch Jar- $25, 3 1/2 inch piranha- $40). oh and when I asked when 2 rbp will outgrow a 40 gallon i meant how long do they have to be.

So I can basically feed them what I feed my Jars.

wow, a jardinni for $25.. wish you live close to me, then Id buy it for sure.. Here they sell for like $50+ :nilly:

you might not want to keep just a pair. the more you have, the more the aggression gets spread around.
