Advice on Buying First Piranhas

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
oh and is it possible to put mince meat in the autofeeder? (if i make the mince meat into tiny pellets). If not, then what are the small pellets I can feed them?

That could probably work right there, it'd be easier, and then, when the piranha outgrow the 50, you'll have bigger accomodations by then.

My question is:
If it's only a one or 2 yr plan, where are they going to go after a year or two? are you going to sell them, or upgrade? If you plan to upgrade, it's better to do it sooner rather than later, because plans can easily fall through...

That's why I keep referring to LIFE instead of the next couple of years.

I would hate for them to be in cramped quarters because it wasn't taken into account their adult size, lifespan, and knowing how long they were going to be a part of your home....does that make any sense? ^^

I'm not sure about minced meat, but Wardley's has small pellets (I don't know if you get that brand there or not) If not, small cichlid pellets and you can get larger pellets as they grow.

I am goin to sell them because I am leaving the country and shipping them back to where i am going will be a problem, my simple question was how long can the specs can a 37 inch by 13 inch by 20 inch last 3 piranha?

depends on the size...

a larger one can go without longer than a smaller one can.

I wouldn't know, cuz I feed mine every day, 2-3 times (I have 2 sizes)

I always give my fish an 1" of space from the tip of the snout to the glass and a 1'' of space from the edge of the tail to the glass. Meaning if your tank is 9" wide the fish would be 7'' in total length. That is the very maximun that I permit before I upgrade to a larger tank. Some do not aggree with me and believe that more space is required for a 7'' fish and that is true if that fish is going to be in a particular tank for its life, a seven inch fish should be kept in something wider for life say 11"-13''. But if its temporary, Just as long as there is enough space for the fish to freely turn around without touching the glass, then you're good.
7" is what you have to work with. I've raised reds to about 7'' personally in about 10 months maybe less. Reds slow down as well as serras after 6'' though not as much as serras do.
With this tank that you are talking about, I believe that you are going to be cramped for space sooner then you think. And thats with one red.

Thanks a lot guys but can someone please tell me how big they have to be to go about a month without food?

i dont even know what to say to this kid except dont buy the rbps you seem to be not mature enough to own such a fish your arowanas are very unhappy and are killing each other. find another hobby. or start reading more and start asking the right questions.as a responsible fish keeper its a life long dedication and i meen the fishes life.

If you are going to do something like this you should do it right. By the time piranhas are 2 years old they are full grown and require a tank that is much wider than 9". I don't even care how long it is, if the fish can't turn around the tank is too small.

Your questions include how big they must be to go a month without food and not eat each other and if they can be kept in a 9 inch wide tank for life. I hope that I'm wrong but it sound like you are trying to do the bare minimum to keep these fish alive.
