my carpintis which i believed to be a male is digging a pit and showing breeding colours in a tank of male fish, its vent is thin and pointed and the dorsal fin is dark midway down but not a deffinate black blotch.confused carpintis or very confused fish keeper either way some advice and help would be great.

as far as digging a pit and showing colors, my male carpintis did this as well . . . but yeah, if you post a pic, it might help determine the sex . . .

female.........if it wher male it would have more of an extention on the fins and a larger head ...and its a good lookin fish.....

^ I disagree, if the vent is thin and pointed is a male 100%

I disagree with this. Ive had over 15 carpintis and/or cyanos and neither of those characteristics were true for either sex. Ive had females that "characteristically" looked like males and vice versa...and none seemed to really have trailers or longer fins than the other...or if they did, it was minute.

It looks more male to me, but definitely vent it.

I also disagree....the slope of the forehead alone indicates to me that it would be male. Going by fin extensions is definitely not a reliable way to sex any CA species. There are many, many species where both male and female can get fin extensions to some degree.

I also do not see the trademark black blotch in the dorsal. The dorsal is very dark but I don't see a blotch.

As others have said, venting is definitely the most reliable way but by the characteristics I see I would definitely say male. :)

my first thought was female, as compared to the male that I had it didn't have quite the same characteristics . . . but yes, when in doubt, vent it out . . .
