Advice on priming a Fluval 405!!!

Ok so I have a Fluval 405 that I am trying to set up. I spent an hour pumping the primer up and down and I got nothing but a bunch of loud noise. A few times it sound like it was about to start pumping water but it didn't. I pumped the primer so hard and long that I broke it. The canister is full of water and I know the filter works because the lady I bought it from have it running before I purchased it. I ordered another part but I need some advice on priming it before the part comes. What was I doing wrong? Please advise. Thanks

You only need to prime it to fill it up with water. Once it is full, you just plug it in and it should start working. Did you have the levers down and in the locked position? If you had them up, then the flow would have been stopped and no matter how much you primed you were not going to get any flow. You did plug it in after it was full of water, right?
 
Make sure the hoses do not loop down below the exit from the canister.
 
Any filter that I have used in the pass that isn't self priming I normally plug it in and hold the filter upside down and when the lines fill with water I SLOWLY start turning it right side up and it does the trick.

I fill canister with water plug in take a power head drop in below water level remove strainer from intake pump water into intake it will instantly start the filter pumping and it will continue to suck water as long as intake is below water line

Thank God!!! After breaking two of the primer sticks I finally got it. I did what a couple of you advised. I filled it up and turned it upside down until it start to push the water thru the I turned it back over. I hope this will get easier.

I love AC HoB hate there canisters. have had nothing but issues with them. go Ehiem for a canister or even the knock off jobie (sp)
 
lol I would've just put my mouth to the outflow and inhaled. Would've saved you time and that stupid priming pump. Works every time in no time.
