ADVICE ON SEALING A LEAK

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes try ang get out all of the silicone you can. i didn't seperate the glass. I just scraped off the inside and outside seals then took a need and pushed through the bottom seal. once i was through i got some picture wire and sawed at the silicone. its a big pain but it worked. i am sure i didn't get ALL of the silicone off the glass but i did my best. one of the really expierenced guys on hear told me that silicone would stick to silicone if its very clean. i know it did in mine. just get the old stuff out the best you can and keep wiping it down with alcohol. get it as clean as you possibly can! If the tank is on its side you can see the silicone squeeze into the bottom joint as you apply it.

What did you guys do about the corners? I'll do my best to get as much of the silicone out on the edge that has the leak but what about where it meets the other seams at the corner? Should I just clean it really well and hope that they bind together?
I'll try and take pictures as I proceed. Thanks for all the advice.

do you mean the actual corner of the tank. as in the 4 corners? where mine was leaking was along the bottome seam in the middle. i dug out all of the silicone up to about 2" from each corner. then i cleaned this area really well so the new silicone would bond to the old. i used a spray bottom and a blow dryer to try and push the alcohol back in between the joints.

Yeah the 4 corners of the tank, Im concerned about the new silicone meeting the old. I think I will do as you did and go close to but not all the way to the corner.
I just got back from home depot and got the GE Silicone I. Now even it says not for aquarium use but then alot of people here have been saying thats what they use. Am I mistaken or should I proceed as planned?

Well, the Silicone II says that it has anti mold/mildew additives, as did most of the stuff on the shelf. This says it does not. hmmmmmm......
