Hi, I met a seller who just sent me this e-mail. I did some research before on canister filters. I was set on getting the Eheim 2217 for my current 60 gallon tank, and I'm upgrading to a 150 gallon tank soon. But, this seller offered me $70 for the Rena XP3 and all of the filter media that costs $50 alone. I'm guilty for not doing my research, but this is short notice and I wonder if I should jump on this deal. Please let me know, thanks! Here's what he said:

"The XP3 was a great filter for me. I only used it for two to three months before my arrowana jumped out of the tank and died. I have all the filter media with it which alone would cost you $50.00. I would take $70.00 cash at this point. I havn't listed it solo yet but this is half of its value."

P.S. Will I still need my HOB filter if I get this? I mainly want something that doesn't agitate the top of the water so that my Aro can swim freely.

i have a XP4 and i love it,
IMO rena makes some great filters.
If you do end up buying it im sure you will not be disapointed, specially with that price.

Great, I might just take this then. Can you confirm that this does not disturb the top of the water like a HOB filter does? I'd like to have the top portion of the water as still as possible for the Aro to go back and forth.

You can aim the spray bar or spray jet however you want. Some surface agitation is needed IMO, but it is your tank bro.

Good point, I do have an air stone and sponge to pump air into the tank that'll provide some surface agitation. I was referring to the waterfall from the HOB which my Aro seems to swim around each time he passes it.

ya with my XP4 i keep the spray bar just under waterlevel so that the surface moves a little but the spray is still under the water. you can move it to however you like

I love the rena cannisters. I have the XP2, 3 and 4.
XP2 on a 10gallon, XP3 on a 33gallon and the XP4 on a 75gallon.

I also have th Fluval FX5 for my 120. I was running the XP3 and 4 on it for awhile but got a wicked deal on the FX5 that I couldn't pass up but that one doesn't come with a spraybar so since you want minimal surface agitation I'd go with the Rena, and then use the powerjet attachment a few inches below the waterline instead of the spraybar. That's how I have it configured on my 10g and the surface is pretty still except from an airstone.

woa huge filtration on the 10 gallon heh 300gph
hell of a turnover, full tank turnover in 2 mins heh
