Advice Please: Rena XP3 on Craigslist for $70.. Should I get it?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A xp3 without media for that price is a good deal. Plus this one has media, not sure what he spent 50 bucks on but I would research the media that is included in the deal.

me neither i haven't really done research on canister filter prices, as well as the media. i had a feeling it was a good price, and you guys confirmed it. i'm gonna pick it up tomorrow afternoon, i hope everything works out good.

You should have no more than $50 in media. YOu could go on ebay and buy the ceramic bio media for the tank. That is where I got mine. 3 liters for about $13. The foam you have to suck it up and just buy. Drs Foster & Smith are reasonable.

Great I just purchased the Rena XP3 and am in love with it! It works so much more powerfully and efficiently than regular HOB's. I have two final questions:

1. The poop at the bottom of the tank is still stuck on rocks. I was wondering since a canister filter is so powerful, if I were to remove all the rocks would poop that fell to the bottom automatically get sucked into the filter since the circulation is much better? If not, can I put an air stone in there to push the poop from the ground, and let it circulate into the filter?

2. Some people have mentioned that agitation at the top of the water is necessary for some reason I'm not sure. Do I absolutely need surface agitation? I prefer it quiet for my Arowana so he can swim freely at the top, but I can put in the air bubbles if needed for agitation.

congrats on the filter, told you you'd like it :)

first, you more than likly wont be able to just have all the poop go into your filter regardless, best bet there is to net most of it up and invest in a decent gravel cleaner.

second, the more surface agitation you have lets you have a better oxygen transfer. but if you dont want to have the filter to agitate the water your probably fine anyways being as you were talking about getting an airstone.
the more oxygen the better :) (dont go overboard and put 20 airstones in or anything)

thanks! i'll go ahead and stick with the gravel and do a 20% water change with my gravel vac each week as usual.

for now, my aro's are breathing out of their mouth's (mouths open and closes), i hope this is just an initial shock to the new water flow system of the filter!

other than that, everything works A OK. a canister filter is awesome, and leagues better than my old HOB!
