I had one of these in my hap/peacock tank, which was no big deal till he changed colors and became sexually mature. The guy was a beast. I put him in the only other tank I could put him in. The Clown Knife tank. The CK enjoyed him very much...
Nothing wrong with Melanochromis auratus. Take 1 male and give him 3-4 females. These fish are no more aggro than most of the other Malawi's. Most of them don't like another male being too close to them. The best is to try and buy them as small as possible so they can grow together. Give them the biggest tank you can together with loads of rocks for hiding places.
I still stand that you should not mix him with peacocks. My peacocks lived in the tank, but they did not grow well. I removed them into a peacock setup and they are doing much better.
i agree with everyone about mixing them with peacocks-i doubt it would work. if your hubby absolutely must have them just provide him some ladies and lots of rockwork. i have 2 mel. auratus albinos in a 180 gallon and they are doing great-but ive been told the albinos are less aggressive than the others..
even at a smaller size than my other mbuna and haps they will stand their ground against my sci. fryeri-its interesting to watch.
