hi i've been offered a stinging catfish from the local shop, the guy in shop say's that it can kill a human but it just looks like a walking cat 2 me .is this true or is he hitting me with sales pitch any repliy would be gratefull
if its just a walking catfish the sting is very un plesant its not fatal the coral catfish the only catfish that lives in full marine conditions has a much nastyer sting but i don't think its fatal as we'll
He's probably talking about Heteropneustes fossilis...http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=134.
I've read old books claiming deaths attributed to these......but I have my doubts lol. I would believe that the sting would be VERY painful, probably similar to a salt water Lion fish or the affore mentioned coral cat.
He may very well just be showing nothing more than due caution. After all a bee sting is no big deal to most people but can be fatal to those unfortunate few who are alergic...like my step son. I belive that ANY possibility of serious injory or death should be mentioned and concidered.
Very true, HOWEVER (and don't quote me on this 'cause I'm not sure I'm right) I believe the chemical make up the bee venom vs. H.fossilis is different and doesn't cause the same reaction i.e anafelactic (spelling's way off I know) shock from bees?!? Is bee venom a neurotoxin? I truly don't know. Some wasp venom is. I know Lion fish and coral cats venom is a neurotoxin and the pain from such a sting can be DULLED , not eliminated, with as hot water as you can stand without burning yourself and meat tenderizer. Speaking first hand on this one BTW, thanks to an over eager coral cat at feeding time. The heat will actually help to break down the toxin and slow/halt it's advance into the rest of your nervous system. Hurts like you woudn't believe though!
