Advise You Got From Your Dad

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My friends father - "Nothing good happens after midnight." Found it to be very true when I look back on life.

My dad - "I hate liars." I make a point to always tell the truth. If the the truth is hurtful then I keep my mouth shut.
My dad - "It doesn't take a man to swallow" Made me see the ridiculousness of trying to prove manhood by drinking.
My dad - "never discuss your sex life, Its disrespectful to your wife" That was before I was even married and now listening to other guys around me I see what he means.

This thread is for quotes or advise you got from your dad that you either rang true or eventually came true for you. If you never knew your dad then you can quote your grandfather or even mom or a father figure.

I'll go first. they sound better in my native tongue, but either way, now that I'm older I get it now.

"listen to old people for their words are like silver and gold. pick them up and put them in your pocket. if you don't you will drop them and someone else will pick them up and make a good life for themselves"

"when you are looking for a wife, research and look into her family tree and their roots"

I highly agree with both. Those are both things I learned on my own.

Ahhh.. I got a lot of advise from my dad before he passed away from Cancer. But now that im older I can look back and see he was spot on with it all and I was a dumb kid not willing to listen.

My dad used to say

"Son. 3 things you cant ever have at the same time. You can have 2 of these but not all 3. You cant have it cheap, Fast and Good. You can have it Cheap and fast, but it wont be good. You can have it good and fast but it wont be cheap, you can have it cheap and good, but its not gonna be fast."

He also said.

"Son, know some day you will find a woman, settle down get married. You are no longer the boss in your world. If you wish for a happy life make her a happy wife."

At the same time he told me..

"Son, In that relationship with your wife you can chose to be right or chose to be happy. Sooner or later you will not care about being right."

Got hundreds more of great stuff from my dad.

"Anything you do on the computer can be traced"

This was like '89, so he was way ahead of the times...

Lots of great advice and sayings from your Dads here... Alot to think about and remember now as your maturing and becoming Dads too..... great legacy .. some dads have so much wisdom...

wow... he was a very smart man...

"you must fall and hurt yourself in order to learn"
"when life feels like crap, its because it is but you always got me to come and cry with"
"if you ever need money for condoms tell me, cause i dont wanna be raising any children while your in highschool"

Id like to think he was. The more Ive aged and dealt with life situations the more it comes across how spot on everything he told me was. Now at 45 years of age with a daughter that turns 21 this month Ive tried my best to pass on that wisdom and live my life from many of the things he taught me that I was "Absent" from learning when I was younger.

Here is some others

"Do everything in your life with a passion as its the last time you will do it. Live every minute to the fullest. Experience everything in life you could ever imagine. There are no do overs"

"A real man doesnt love a million women. A real man loves a single woman a million ways"

"Never start a fight with anyone you can win"

"The character of a person and what they are made of never comes out in good times. Hard times will show all and make you a better man"

Of course there are some VERY funny ones he gave me. I will have to see if I can clean them up. But there were also good advice to lol

My dad never was in touch with with his deep feelings so he never told me any kind of crazy advice. But he always did say this to me when I wanted him to buy me something. "No money, no honey"
