That looks more like the undescribed Andinoacara cf. Atabapo rather than the Aequidens sp. Atabapo. Yes, there is both an undescribed blue acara and an undescribed Aequidens from the Atabapo.

He's had both over the years. The Aequidens has the body length bar that most of that genus has, plus a midlater upwards blotch. If this link works, even at the distance you can see the pattern here:

There is an old topic elsewhere that I will also try to find.

this was just order a few months ago, right before he ran out of them. Im about 99.9% sure that is what i order. But im don't know much about acaras, so im not exactly sure

Well, both species are sold as 'aequidens sp. atabapo' ... Andinoacara was just described last year, so it isn't used by dealers yet. Very confusing, but you can get either species when ordering but that name and it would be the 'correct' trade name for both.

It deffinately looks more like a blue acara than it does an Aequidens from your pics.

I'd say male, these Atabapo blue acaras seem to follow the usual fin length sexing of a lot of cichlids, where the normal blue acaras (A. pulcher) don't always. The one pic I've seen of a pair of these Atabapo blue's the female had a very rounded anal fin and a slightly rounded dorsal. But it is a bit small.

And yes, it's very confusing. *l*

ok thanks. this thing is quite aggressive. I thought they were suppose to be peaceful but not at all. So is this like a newer discovery, so its kind of rare?
