how much aeration do i need in my tank to keep my fish healthy? right now i have my two powerheads with the air hoses plugged into them, i don't like the way it looks tho with all the bubbles shooting across my tank, will a couple big air stones do the job?

All you need is enough to break the surface tension.

All you need is enough to break the surface tension.

That is all you need.
With all the discussion about power outages if I were starting out. I would get a battery powered air pump and bubbler wand. Extra doesn't hurt. While not much O2 gets absorbed through the water column the extra surface agitaion helps and if all you have is filter outlets stirring the surface this could be a problem during a power outage.

The battery air pump is a great back up in case of lost power. As for the rest of your question you don't really need either as long as you proper filteration then it would be fine. When I had my 55s I had two aqua clear 70 hobs and a small circulation pump I only used to cycle the cloady water after large water changes.

Bro, you waited less than 40 minutes for a reply, and you posted this at 1am Eastern Time Zone when most people that come on this board are asleep.

As for your question, it depends what filtration you have on your tank and how your fish are behaving. You don't necessarily need any air pumps/bubblers, etc...

You need surface agitation as was said earlier. For example, all I run on my 55 gallon tank is a AC110 HOB filter. It gets plenty of oxygen into the water for my stock (4 tiger barbs, 2 juvie grammodes, 1 pictus cat, and 1 clown loach). The AC110 flows the water down a small waterfall into the tank, and moves the water around pretty well.

If you use a canister, and don't have the return set up to disrupt the surface of the water, you may need to do some other type of disruption for the water surface.

Observe your fish, and make sure they aren't breathing hard, or going up to the surface too frequently in an attempt to splash and get air. That's the main thing. If your fish are happy and healthy, you are fine.

You need air in the tank. The one Guy had hob filters which make a small waterfall into the tank causing air bubbles and breaking the surface. I personally like the power heads but if you want an air pump and a stone you can do that also either one works. Just don't stop having having something working in the tank.
