African Arowana Aggression

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had 4 starting out at 3.5 to 4". Got rid of two at around 8" , and now 2 remains. Biggest is 13-14", second is about 10-11". Only seen them aggressive towards each other and does fine in a community environment. Cant keep both afrowana together thus far. My suggestion maybe is to add some dithers that are not torpedo shaped. Good luck

I would keep the afro as there much harder to acquire than the other fish mentioned. Not sure what tankmate combination would work best for your tank, but adding dithers is worth a try. Tankmates for mine are Giant Albino Gouramy and a mixture of loaches, datnoids both big and small.

I'm trying to make an all African tank. An all polypterus tank is cool but as sedentary as they are I want something that moves reliably. Nothing like showing your tank to some friends and you have a bunch of logs in the tank. What about a shoal Congo Tetras as dithers? Or would they just be bichir snacks? Just to clarify the Afro didn't rip the rck and ray to pieces. I'm pretty sure he stressed them out a lot, causing them to get sick.

Afro have a tendency to chase relentlessly if they don't like a certain fish based off from what I have read in this forum. Not sure as I personally have never seen them consistently chase anybody other than another African aro.

To go with your African them. I'm not sure on ideas as I keep mine with SE Asian species. I'm sure there are many larger species that can peacefully intermix.

Another reason to keep is that MFK Vendors are selling them $299+ for 12-14" sizes. Whatever the reason: costly to raise (feeding), not common, growout difficulties, supply availability, or whatev? So, their value is cool to have in your tank. Just my opinion. Something to consider if you decide you want to go get another one in the future. A plus is to have is an aro type sifting sand and thinks that it's an eartheater cichlid.

I agree. I think that I'll keep him for another month or two and see what happens. If his aggression gets worse I'll probably trade him for a black aro of similar size. I wish I had the time (and money) to dedicate a separate tank for both the african and black aro. If the afro hated a clown knife as bad as he did, I couldn't imagine him with another aro.
