I thought they were more of a hardy arowana if you have a sand substrate he could just sift thru that all day right

If you get them above 10" they will eat normally
It's when they are small they need to filter feed and need constant food
At 10" they will take normal foods pellets or prawn

They don't tolerate conspecifics at all, especially at smaller sizes. He obliterated my clown knife when they were both 9-10". However, now that hes 16" he doesn't bother a soul, including my 5" african brown knife. I feed mine massivore, tilapia, shrimp, and blood worms.
Once larger, 10"+ their constant feeding requirements greatly reduce. mine can go days without food just sifting sand eating any scraps and detritus.
