POWER BUMP!

I have 2 at 8-9 inches. They are very very fragile at young stage. I started with 6, they were literraly eating one day and die the next day (some in the same day)

At 2" when I got them, I feed them 2-3 times a day with bloodworms. They do need room to cruise around. They grow faster if you can give him that much room.

My two started out in a breeder net. I moved one to a 75 gallon and one in a 20, the one in the 75 growout is about a full inch larger than the other one.

They're all over the tank, they're fun to watch and grow...it just takes a lot of dedication for the first 8" or so due to their inability to store fat reserve

they kinda remind me of a carp...they are cool in their own way, don't peak my interest, but a unique fish no the less...
Yeah, and I do miss mine(sold it to another member at near ten inches),but I'll get another someday.

i may get one someday, but they are lower on my list of fish to have...i would get it to add to my collection of the "not your everyday fish", but that would be the main reason to get it...i am sure that after i get one i will like it and want more...i am just like that...

You won't regret it. Once they get larger they exhibit the Arowana gracefulness that we've all come to recognize, but they are much more active than some of their cousins. Whereas my Black Aro occasionally likes to lurk at the top of the tank without moving much, my African is in constant motion.

Yes Madding, the Arowana gracefulness....
That sounds exactly like it looks...
Superb.
:D

New to me. Gives me that primitive Jurassic feeling inside. Like a coelacanthe head. Very nice.

I've noticed a handful of recent threads inquiring about the African Arowana, so I thought I'd bump this thread to invite the new keepers in for any questions they have. :D

What's in a name, but it keeps bothering me.
I have to recall a previous remark of mine, as it is the family
Heterotidinae to where the African Arapaima belongs.
No subfamily. It became a family after the taxonomic
information system was overhauled.
Cant find any evidence on the net anymore, but I stand for it!
Previous I found terms like Arapaimidae, which now is replaced by
Heterotidinae.
So no Arowana, but an Arapaima. An African Arapaima.
Whats in a name.

I found november 27, 2008 as the date I took my 4" (10 cm) Arapaima home.
In 16 months he grew 15,7" (40 cm). Thats 1/12 cm a DAY!
That's 1" a month!
In this rate hes gonna be 3'3" in 20 months from now.

My fastest growing fish.
