African Brown Knife

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ABK are way nippier. And more food aggressive. You can keep those two together, the signals won't cross. Just have a big tank because BGK command a large space at night when they're most active. A 75 gallon should suffice.

I wouldn't say that ABK's are nippy but they're definitely extremely curious. When I had mine, it would always swim straight up to new fish then just swim away. As far as their electrical currents causing death, I think it depends on how big the tank is. I kept an ABK with an aba aba knife for 6 months without problems until I felt the aba was big enough to move into the big tank.

African Knives are not electrical fish. Only South American knives, like BGK are, so even if the electrical thing is an issue it is not relevant in regards to an AKF with an EN. I would for sure get the EN first (after the tank is cycled and very stable) because they usually have to learn to eat, and are easily out competed for food. Wait til he is eating well to add anything else. I would probably skip most kinds of catfish, loaches, etc. My first EN died of starvation because even though I fed him faithfully at night the loaches can eat way faster, and by the time I realized how little he was actually getting, he was too far gone to save. I do love them though, so I think they are worth the extra work. I am currently getting a big tank up and running to do a school of them, because that's how they live in the wild. But you would need at least a 100-125g tank to make a group work.

Eels and knife should work well with the EN because they tend to be more deliberate feeders.

Thanks. I'll have my 150g available soon.

It may just be my one ABK. He is so nippy. He doesn't even try to kill the other fish, just nip. I thought that the other didn't do it because they were less dominant, but it may be that the dominant one is an oddball.
