I didn't get much out of searching. I was interested in getting an african brown knifefish to put with my florida gar. Assuming that they are around the same size could these two fish work together?:)

Florida gars can get much longer than 2 feet, while African brown knifefish won't get bigger than 8 inches.

You might be able to keep them together until the gar gets bigger, but I wouldn't recommend it, especially since the gar might just attack the knife from the start.

Assuming you have a large enough tank for the gar in the first place, you'd be much better off getting a larger fish.

as long as they are around the same size you should be fine for a while...Florida gars get bigger than 2' in the wild, but don't often reach that in captivity...and if they do, it takes several years for that to happen--

just picked up one and started acclimating it. ill give an update in the next couple hours and pics if anyone cares to see them?

its impossible to kill an african brown knife fish.. mine has survived 2 outbreaks of ich. and was able to live in 90* bleach water(not my fault) for a week. and now its perfectly fine .

the gar won't get to 2 feet overnight (if even at all)...so relax on that

the knife might of survived those horrible conditions because it breaths air as well.

anyways,

great mix

I'm growing a ABK right now, I will probably eventually try it with my gar but if not it will just stay in my growout tank.

I think when the Gar reaches a larger size that knife will be food. Let me see 2 foot predator versus an 8 inch fish-I mean the knife won't even be half the size of the Gar.

African Brown Knives are also slow growers. You can probably keep them together for a little while...at least until the Gar grows to about 13" to 15" At that size, it wouldn't surprise me if a Gar can take down a 8" ABK since they're "skinny" fish.

my 14" florida gar cut 6" goldfish in half to eat the half that it wanted. so eating an african brown knife wouldnt be a problem. that being said, my rtc x tsn is growing out in my florida gar's tank and has been since it was about 4" without a problem. it is possible, but when the gar is about double the length of the abk i would change up the housing and either get the gar something larger or just another tank for the abk.
