african butterfly fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've read that adult males are territorial and may become very aggressive, mainly with surface-dwelling fishes, and especially other males of the same species. I think they look awesome alone (as I keep my little male). A pair or a trio (1 m 2 f) should work well too. As Guppy said, a bigger group may prove useful, especially if you get an aggressive male. It diffuses the beating. ;)
Mine loves to eat little cockroaches, and he eats floating pellets too. Anything that keeps near the surface may be eaten. I really love these "mini-arowanas". :D

Best regards.

Daniel.

Another thing that diffuses aggresion is several groups of plants that lie along the surface, the pursued one ducks into or onto it and the chaser loses interest.

thanks for the info how do you tell them apart (male and female) and will they be ok with daily 1/4 water changes its need for the discus?

Adult females are heavier bodied and have a fairly straight rear edge to thier anal fin. Males have relatively larger "wings" and a wavey or ragged rear edge to the anal fin. As long as they have somewhere to hide in while your hands are in the tank they will do fine with the water changes.

ive always jus kept 1 at a time an they've been fine alone, they also eat pretty much any thing they can hold of.... heres a pick of the 1 i have now

Mine use to eat anything that fit in their mouths!! The only problem I have is that the tank might be very closed or they fly away!!

Locally they are around $6.

They are $10-12ish around here.
