The male's anal fin is thinner and longer than a female's anal fin.

Also, when looking down on a group of yearling+ ABFs kept together, the females will have broader bodies due to the size differences of reproductive organs between males and females. Egg development will also cause females to become much broader than males.

Ok thanks for the info! Can they be kept with a young senegal?

Yes, the sen is a bottom dweller and the butterflys are strictly top dwellers so they shouldn't really interact too much. The butterfly might not even know the sen is there.

This is my butterfly, recently acquired in a trade for a 3" heckelli threadfin. I was told it was female, idk how true that is though. She does have a shorter broader anal fin. Shes a beauty, really rounds out my grow out tank, shell be a perm resident there.

I keep mine w/ an albino senegal, a regular senegal, 2 heckelli threadfins, a gymno balzani, and a leopard ctenopoma. No problems a couple days in, seems to jusr pick his spot and chill around it. Hasnt gone after anything, only think i think he can eat is the one otocinclus sucker cat i have in there to help clean up. I dont think there a danger to other fish really, unless it messes with the butterfly a lot.
