There is also a cichlid sand by Carib Sea, comes in different colors but it's expensive. A lot of people will use pool filter sand and the add crushed coral in mesh bags to their filters for buffing. It's alot cheaper when talking about big tanks.
I mixed 50/50 play sand and black onyx sand. I wish I would have used more onyx sand than play sand. (really no play sand at all) the onyx sand is heavier and is easier to deal with while sucking up detritus. The play sand has the tendency to get sucked up easily. My rocks are always getting covered by the play sand from the fish digging. The onyx sand usually falls off the rocks and back where it belongs. IMO buy a substrate that is heavier than play sand or pool filter sand.
I will say I like the look of my 50/50 mix but knowing what I know now, I would have waited to save up the money for 100% black onyx sand.
I used play sand. big mistake. Although after 3 or 4 years most of the fine particles "worked themselves out" I like it now, but it's a mess when its new, even if you wash it.
