African cichlid

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was leaning towards zebra or a mix. I have also found that adding salt helps the healing process.

The injured fish is not a yellow lab. I had three yellow labs. I’m down to two. I think it might be a red zebra. I think there are at least two females in the tank to. I know one for sure because she has had fry twice. There’s about a dozen cichlids, 1 cuckoo catfish and 2 bristlenose plecos. There’s also roughly a half a dozen fry left in there about a half in long.

OK, you definitely need to add more mbuna to spread the aggression around. At least double the amount you have now.

I have a grow out tank with about 25 other cichlids in it that I was going to put in next weekend but I didn’t want to if this was a fungal or bacterial thing.

I am also wondering if I should try to remove the few that I know are females from the 125g
When I kept mbuna I had them mixed males and females. The advise I was given is they are aggressive all the time so it doesn't matter but if the males have females it takes up some of their attention. I kept them crowded and I tried to get pairs when I got them. Unfortunately they will cross breed and alot of people look down on that. The lfs I took my babies to didn't seem to care. I think most of the ones I took were not hybrids but I don't know for sure. I was like 14 and didn't have any idea of the hybridization issues with people. I get it now and if I was to do it again (nope!) I'd keep them in smaller tanks( think 40b) with only 1 type in a given tank in a ratio of 1m to 3-4f.

Yea that’s why I want to take them out. I have a peacock that keeps having fry and they are definitely a mix and I’m not sure which other had fry but only once. They are just brown with kinda blue fins though. The store that I usially go to the guy said he won’t take any fish. He is super picky and only gets from specific places.

Hey I have one cichlid that always seems to have some white on him. I put him in a hospital tank and tried some medication that I was told to use. At a different store I was told it was just stress. Now it’s worse and another one of my fish have died. I want to medicate the whole 125 gallon tank but I need someone with more experience to let me know if I should and with what? The cichlid that died seems to have quite a bit of white on it and maybe is slightly reddish in some spots. The one that’s still alive almost looks like it has a red sore on it. I want to take him out again tomorrow but I no longer have an empty tank to put him in as a friend brought a fish to my place that is in the quarantine tank right now. The red spec on the dead one is a piece of dirt after scooping it out. I also tested the water and all levels are totally fine.
