African Cichlids and live food

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
More than likely the mbunas will kill the crayfish and eat'm. Repeated high doses of protiens to mbunas can cause malawi bloat - hence not recommended. Some not all species of Peacocks and Haps like a high protien diet however they can get bloodthisty - turning on their tankmates for food. Years ago I'd thro a gold fish in from time to time to see the Afro's tear it up and believe me they do - I've since given up that practice after loosing fish to bloat. Risk isn't worth the reward.

pretty much what everyone else said.
Malawians we feed mostly NLS & HBH veggy flakes. Once in a great while I throw in some ghost shrimp.
AS far as the cray it may work for awhile & they can eat a ciclid or two but when the cray sheds & the cichlids know it its lobster dinner time! Once they eat one they will eat anymore that enter the tank knowing their weekness during shedding.

Now if you have Lamps, Julis, Frontosa you can give a treat of brine, worms, etc.. without problems & can even help in breeding some?

Well I'm not gonna lie, I love my aggressive meat eaters. African Cichlids are cool and I would love to own some but they will wait for another time.
