How many can I put in a 180 Gallon Fish Tank? I'm getting rid of my piranhas and starting a cichlid fish tank.

What species of african cichlids are you interested in? There are so many to choose from with that kind of tank size. :D

Before started you have to consider which type of cichlids do you want.
There are plenty o choose from,
1. Malawi
2. Tanganyika
3. Victoria
4. New World
5. South American
6. Etc

He wants african cichlids, so you can pretty much eliminate the new world cichlids which includes south american and central american cichlids.

For a tank that large i would recommend a hap tank. The males get great color and size.

But thats just my 2 cents lol:headbang2

Here's a funny for ya. Years ago I got one of my fraternity brothers into African cichlids.
He had a 55 gallon tank. He put Africans and piranhas in it. Amazing how fast those little piranha were growing at the expense of the Afrcans!!

go with the smallest, least aggressive ones you like first then any that attend to be more aggressive & grow quick last.
Try to either make it a all male tank or have fish that do not look alike. Example: Demasoni & male saulosi look similar & may go at it or may cross breed? Also more females to a single male.
starters: 12 Electric yellows to cycle for a week. next batch, dozen saulosi, next dozen acei, next dozen greberi, next dozen Aul of one kind or just males? Next a dozen Electric Blue Ahli (fryi), Next maybe Venustus? Insignus? compressiceps? (stay away from Tyranochromis & some nimbochromis, Ps kenyi, Mel aratus, chipokee etc. because attend to be real pricks unless you want a war tank? You could mix the 3 lakes of fish just start small first.
Also have no decor or a lot of it. Over crowding of decor & fish will cut aggression down most of the time?

good luck
