African Cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sorry to say, 12-15 isn’t nearly enough in an all male 75 under 6”. One or two is almost certainly going to get singled out and killed.
25-35 is where he needs to be. That is even more important with mbuna and Tangs

Theres a difference between overstocking to manage aggression and overstocking for the sake of cramming as many fish as possible in a certain amount of space. Correct numbers will allow fish to act natural, while managing aggression.

Mbuna and tang stocking is nowhere near similar to one another.

12-15 doesn’t manage aggression in a 75 with tangs or mbuna and 25-35 isn’t cramming, it’s the right amount. if he only has 12-15 he’s gonna end up with 3 or 4 getting picked to death. If he wants natural behavior he needs one male and 3 or 4 female I’ve been keeping Africans for 30 years, I know what I’m talking about

Here’s a mixed African tank I had a few year’s ago, granted in this vid some were juvies, but most were 5-6”. There’s was 32 in this 75, no tattered fins, a little bickering but none were singled out. I did give the venustus away shortly after this vid, he was sort of a rescue but this is a properly stocked all male mixed tank

I find 12 haps and peacocks perfect if I am doing male only in 48x18. Mixed gender I like 20 individuals. Everyone does not have to agree on a single way to keep Africans. If things have worked for me for 15 years and things have worked for you for 15 each, both can be valid.

I like to have a tank that resembles the lake and I like the activity of the fish better when the tank is overstocked but to just the right level that works for me. More spread out than the pics. I have not had aggression problems with the right stocking.

I prefer a fuller tank, but my comment was mainly in regards to mbuna and tangs. I agree that your stocking for your peacocks is good, I prefer a little more tho, do you have a vid or pic of your peacock tank? I always like to see others
