African ciclid help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Malawi is the lake they came from. There are three groups of cichlids in the lake; Haps, peacocks, and mbuna.

And yes you should stick with just the mbuna

sweet, so the 3 are ok together? what about jewls?? i just need to get rid of the kenyis, and i managed to get a pretty good pic of the blue one

Wow, you have to be really fast around here with the responses.

awesome, thx for the link too. what are jewls? kinda got my heart set on a pair of them, juvenile ofcourse, would they be ok too??

what if i put the jewls in while all fish are juvis, and also could someone plz tell me the sex of that blue fish i have a pic up for, im thinking female but i dunno

wow you guys have been posting like crazy lol. i would get rid of the two kenyis, and the red zebra-simply the red zebra will outgrow the tank-i have 4 in my 180 and they are really fast growers and reach a pretty big size. i wouldnt mix any jewels in with mbuna (mbuna is a word that means "rock dwelling" and it is referred to lake malawi (the lake in africa where they originate from) in a 29 gallon- you have really no room for error in a small tank.

i would suggest you not to buy anymore fish until you can upgrade your tank size-then use the 29 as a grow out for any babies you buy before putting them in with the bigger, older ones.. its just what i would do. i know you want to buy more fish, but a 29 gallon is simply too small for anything but a pair, or a group of dwarf cichlids (malawi does have some dwarf species, and like mike said-lake tanganyika has some great shellies that would be beautiful in there-without any mbuna mixed in)

if your selection is small, keep in mind there are always online breeders and sellers who have big varieties-i buy all of my fish from an online breeder in kentucky-just a few hours away from me... with great success.
