African clawed frogs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Davo, the pics of the ACF are totally awesome! Thanks for sharing them with me.:) However, my frogs are albino. From what I hear, they are blind. But if that was true, then how come everytime I turn on my viewing light, they both freak out and go hide? And how the hell do ya tell the difference between male and female? I am also still curious as to just how HUGE do these iridescent sharks really get? are we talking like a foot or more? Sorry for all the questions.... I am pretty new at all of this.:grinyes:

OMG! No way! If only I can grow him to be that big! I have a 30 G tank but I do not have it set up yet. I already knew that my oscar was going to outgrow the tank. I can hardly wait till I have some BIG monsters of my own.

Females are often larger and fatter than males, and they have a little extension between their legs (see photo). The frogs mature after 10 months to a year, and the males begin vocalizing at this age in the evening hours. males also develop dark mating pads on the undersides of their hands and arms. The albino shouldnt be blind unless someone poked it in the eye. there are a variety of colour morphs including a gold one. and a pic i chucked in of frog that was genetically engineered with a fluorescent "reporter gene" designed to be expressed only in the eyes.

That is odd. I read on many websites that the albino is blind, but I will take your word for it. Love the pics, btw. I am assuming that my frogs are males, but you said that they dont fully develop until they are like almost a yr old. I have had them for a couple of months....have no idea how old they actually are. I do know that they are not 5 inches yet.

o dont listen to me, i dont really know. maybe its the way they are bred, i just meant it shouldn't be blind just cause its an albino

hmmm well just found out they do have poor eye site and use their sensory organs along their body and their sense of smell to find food and detect predators. apparently they are more long sighted and sea things better about 7cm away. nothing on albinos being blind
