African glass bangers?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What about Buttikoferi? These fish seem pretty mean.

So I hear...

Yes that is one,

But I have a 26" plus Emperor that eats 12" red devils for Breakfast & Tyrannochromis & Kendali & 10" Male Frontosa!
She attacks & keeps coming back for more with me & anything else that comes in or near her tank. Plus she is know not to like certain people that come in & will chase them like a dog! Most Bad *** fish I ever owned! I have Wild & F1 Dovi, Black Belts, Argentae etc in the Hatcherys That I would not think would last with her at thier current sizes. They would have to be adults to contend.
Mike with the 15,000 gallon Mega tank has or had them in there with the central/sa stuff & we talked about them in the past.

Hey Dave, I was going to mention your Emporer....Cool fish, definitely a glass banger.. Some very good replies here...I especially liked the one about how the fish' territory would extend 3 feet beyond the glass....What a great way to explain it. Great posts, guys.

Go spend $5 bucks and get you a little Auratus. In my redneck fish keeping days I had them in with devils and flowerhorns. They are mean as heck. GL

One day I would love to get buttis.
I would also get a huge mbuna tank and just stock it with the nastiest mbunas alive. I think that would be interesting.

Are buttis riverine or madagascan cichlids?

Buttikoferi are Tuffy Rhodes....

The list fishfreak gave is pretty bad, expecially the Bucco's. They can get all of 10-12" and would match up nicely with an RD.

Emperor.

Paratilaipa Buttikoferi is the meanest fish I've ever owned. Meanest fish my uncle kept as well, at just 8" it went toe to toe with much larger fish (my uncle had a really, really mixed tank when I was little, this was over 20 years ago the hobby has gotten smarter since then).

This 8" butti would attack a 13" Jag, he was so furious in the tank my uncle moved him with his electric catfish, and it even tried to beat up the catfish while getting shocked... It was relentless.

Being enthralled by that fish when I was younger, finally I had a dumb mixed tank of my own (mostly "mixed" african's, and a large 12" pike cichlid of some type). Mine was the smallest fish in the tank, and every morning i'd wake to find something floating and the Butti fighting with the pike (which he couldn't beat when he was 4 1/2").

Also, keep in mind. Both these tanks were mixed poorly, all fish got along but I wouldn't advice mixing most of the fish my uncle mixed (from the dark days of aquaria) or the dumb things I did when I was young and dumb (putting Butti's with anything).

Hope this helps.
