African Grey Parrot Question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've only kept a pair of sun conures, so I don't have the full blown experience that I need for a problem bird that I can potentially acquire through adoption.

My main reason for choosing the African Grey is the fact that they're not as vocal as other birds. I live in an apartment, so a quiet bird is essential to keeping my neighbors happy.

I haven't completely commit to purchase one just yet, so if you can suggest other medium/large birds that are relatively quiet, please do!

I dont know how you handled he suns noise. I can handle a macaw hollering all day but the sun conures are just so high pitched it gives me a headache within minutes. Do you still have them? And the greys are one of the more quite birds with their vocalization tending to be more towards speaking then bird noises. And are you wanting birds conure size up or bigger? I will check to see if I can find any other quiter birds you might like but I cant think of any off the top of my head.

I don't have the conures anymore, it was a long time ago. They were seriously loud lol.

I know that senegal parrots are relatively quiet as well, but I'd rather have an african grey instead.

I want at least a medium size or large bird because the cage that I already have is very big, so a small bird would not work. Any ideas?

foraging toys, puzzle toys, big shreddable toys..toys that the grey can interact with and keep him busy.

i Mod over at an awesome parrot forum, you might want to ask this question over there rather than a reptile/exotics forum..thats part of a fish forum..lol.

the forum is www.theperch.net you'll get some awesome help fast there.

Oh I just thought of one pionus they are really sweet birds and relatively quite and have good colors too.

And dan what part of the perch do you mod? I love that place they are awesome help.

Plum Headed Parakeet?

I've had cockateils, parakeets(budgies) as a kid but I was in petco a few months ago and this was the most parrot like smaller bird they had. Not sure about noise but honestly a great looking bird and very interactive with me in the store within minutes.

i have 3 cages but there always open and all the birds are usually hang out in one cage. african grey, cockateil, quaker parrot, 2 love birds. the only ones that are a problem is the lovebird that beats the cockateil. ive had all of them since they where being hand fed though. The grey even prunes the cockateil sometimes

also mine has plenty of human and other bird interaction so he doesnt get bored. my girlfriend has 3 of them and the newest one which shows a higher level of sophistication from a bird ive ever seen they keep in the kitchen the other 2 greys are in the "bird room" with her moms 12 other birds. the 2 in the bird room plucked themselves, one of them did it so bad it wont grow back. the other one was so depressed it looked like it was going to die, but after keeping it out with in the living room for like 3 months it healed completely

one of the problems with greys is that they seem to one person. they are awesome though if you are the one that they bond with.

even though mine likes to be around the other birds, when it sees my dad he aways climbs down his cage and go where ever my dad is. while he was a baby and in the pet store my dad visited him almost every day and played with him and fed him

I have had sulfur-crested cockatoo's and they're very easy to keep aside from the mess and the squalking...

Now a happy owner of an Eclectus. Not quite as talkative and intelligent as a Grey, but definately up there. And you can keep them occupied a lot easier. Don't know if you can get them in the States though
