Its going to be hard to keep a variety of fish with an Ornate, the Ctenopoma will become food for the Ornate. I'm doing the same thing trying to go all african fish. Stick with the smaller upper jaw polys like Senegal, Delhezi, Palmas Polli, Palmas Palmas, Retropinnis, Mokelembeme. Other fish would be African Butterflys, African Brown Knife, theres several varities of Microctenopomas Ansorgii, Kingsleyae, Congicum. The Ornate just grows too large too fast to have smaller colorful species.

Buy yourself Dr. Axelrod's ATLAS of Freshwater Fishes. All the fish are categorize by Regions. Look at all the African Region fishes.

Thanks for the suggestion, i now have it on order :)

I've though about that book, but found out its mostly just pictures will little information on the actual fish. I just looked on Rehoboth Aquatics and just started googling the different fish that they have listed, which is mostly african species.

Definitely get an African Arowana. They are the most active fish I've ever owned and are always looking for food. I also have geos and I like how they are always looking for food on the sand, but African Aros are even more active and hungry than geos. Plus, they're always swimming and create a lot of movement in the tank.

I'm not really into African cichlids. I think bichirs are better. Get the harder to find ones like lapradei or palmas and they'll be nice bottom dwellers to your other African fish up top.

If you're able to get a small (4-6) shoal of Distichodus affinis. They grow quite big (but will easily fit in your tank) and would add something different to all those individual fish you have.

I would seriously like one but they top out at 30" so far to big for my tank.

Yup i knew that,i just wanted something to tell me what fish are there, the rest i can work out.

Thanks thats defiantly the sort of thing im after just the problem of the poly. My poly hasn't grown much in the year i have had him despite a good diet. He's 8" but i suspect he will get a growth spurt in the new tank and there is no way i would get rid of him. Its looking like a species tank lol

Right i got my Atlas of fresheater fish and with a little help from fishbase i have a fish list.

Im not intending to keep all of these at the same tank but i think i might be able to work something out. I've tried to get things that are 10" or above that gives me some growing time for the ornate, i can move fish around if he does decide to have a go and then i will decide his future.

So the list
polypterus ornatipinnis (the only must have)
Synodontis Eupterus
Synodontis Angelicus
Brycinus nurse
Brycinus brevis
Oxymormyrus boulengeri
Distichodus maculatus
Schilbe mystus
parauchenoglanis macrostoma

I was thinking my ornate, the Oxy and the Schilbe mixed with a shoal of Brycinus would make a nice display. That leaves the bottom free for the ornate and the Brycinus would fill the rest of the layers.

How big should i expect my ornate to get in this tank im currently working on 16-20" and assuming the higher end of the range?

Any further suggestions on stock greatly appretiated? or should i bite the bullet and pass the ornate on?

Thanks for all the help so far.

If it's me im rehoming the ornate, getting a couple sens, a del, a retro, a couple palmas, african brown knife, leopard ctenpoma, and a school of congo tetras and planting the heck out of it

I would skip the Ornate, since it grows 18+" its going to limit you on what other fish you can have. If you goal is diversity get the smaller polys like sene, del, palmas polli, retro, and moke. I'd also throw in a African Butterfly too.
