African or American - Which is best?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I dig both but I think in the long run I prefer Africans. It's pretty easy to get a variety of color in your tank with Africans and a lot of the new world cichlids get too large and pushy to have an assortment. I guess new world cichlids would be a good bet if you were looking for a center piece type of fish. In the personality department I think they both have their strong points.

Iam moving the thread to the general chiclid area, one post is fine in the general area both sides will be able to reply. The specific fourums are for the specific types of fish.

Cheers for that. I also posted the same thread in the American cichlid forum and that too was moved. I apologise for being relatively new. Any way the tank is cycling now I am waiting for a second heater. The aquascaping is quite nice and more designed towards a Malawi habitat (caves / rocks /dark gravel etc) I am still undecided but the missus is pushing me more towards Africans. Will post some pics when I have time.

You can still do communities with SA/CA but obviously not as stocked as with mbunas. but you can do mixed acara/geo tanks that are pretty impressive.

It depends on which type of fish you want. I have had both types and african cichlids are really aggresive than the american cichlids. African cichld you pretty much have to keep by theselves.

I think the africans are more for having a pretty tank setup and americans are for having an actual pet. I prefer american cichlids, i think they are nicer looking and much more interesting.
