African Substrate

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have what they call Cichlid sand. I forget who makes it. It comes in a liquid that already has the good bacteria in it to establish the tank. Most sand you have to rinse good so it dosen't cloud up the water. This stuff you dump directly into the tank. Sand and liquid. It will dirty the water. However it will only take like 30 minutes to clear up, whereas regular snd can take hours. I would use Texas Holy rock. That stuff is great. it has tons of caves and holes in it for your fish to hide. It is also a natural buffer for your PH.

Aragonite sand is a great natural buffer, but if you want to go cheap, get pool filter sand.

I finished my tank off with aragonite last night. When I went to the LFS the man told me there that I could not use the sand. IT was only for marine. Of course he did not see that it said africans on the bag. I bought it anyway. He told me that my fish could not handle it. Of course I did not tell him that I have discussed this at my old work the only reason I went to his store was because I want the exact type of sand and we could not get more till after Christmas... Anyways I will post a pic soon... I am just mad that a pretty famous LFS in Indiana is telling people that they can not use sand, when we all know that it is great to use with africans... Peacocks love it... Thanks for all the help guys... it helped me decide that I was right and again the LFS was wrong...
