Hey all. Just wanted to let everyone know, I finally found my African Tigerfish. Been looking forever. Went to my favorite fish store today and what do you know - they had about 10 very young (approx 3-4 inch) Tigerfish. Now, they were selling them as Goliaths, but, I'm pretty sure they're Vittatus. Anyone know how to id them at such a small size? I'll post a couple pics shortly. I ended up picking up 2, may go back for another before they're all snatched up.
Any info anyone has would be greatly appreciated, thanks!!

True Goliath is very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very rare.

The chance of you finding a true Goliath is one in I don't even know, million?

Just be very careful your tank has not even the smallest crevice where the fish may jump out.

That's "very" with strong emphasis! :lol2:

Also, if the tank is not big enough for both of them, they will try to eliminate one another. You were right about buying a few more. I have 5 of similar sizes you have in my 40 gallon reef tank, with a jet stream of water coming from a Rio 1700. They swim against the current with no problem. :)

Even if the tank is big enough, if you start out with 2 and don't get more, you'll end up with 1. Its plain and simple, they are extremely territorial within the species, so they don't like to see each other in the same tank. You need to keep 1 by itself (can have tankmates, just not another ATF) or you're going to have to get at least 3 for it to work out. It will spread the aggression out, so aggressor won't concentrate on one fish until it kills it. Instead, it will chase anyone that comes near. Its quite interesting how they switch, or take turns, at being the dominant one. Its like its which ever gets the wild hair up its ass is now king of the tank. :D

For more information, go to the Photo Lounge and look up "tigerfish must look". I posted a detailed profile on Tigerfish there.

nope it isnt, when young, the vittatus already has a reddish colouration at its tail. the goliath is just a plain colour....

Well, picked up my 3rd ATF, have the trio in my 55 gal for now, bigger tank being setup within the next 30 days.

Just curious, it seems a lot of people are getting ATF's lately. Years ago they were pretty much unheard of, now, seems everyone's got one. Does anyone know if there was an aquarium spawn somewhere, or a massive catch in Africa? Just wondering where they all came from suddenly.

No mass breeding, just people have heard of and/or seen pictures of them and are now interested and ordering them, thats all. They are quite plentiful in Africa, they inhabit almost all rivers and major lakes there.

Fangs, are you sure there is no mass breeding? I am asking because the one's that came in lately were a big influx of 2-3 inch fish, I mean BIG influx, HUGE. I thought that they might be farm raised, and I ask that how can it be done knowing that these fish swims in big rivers with fast flowing waters, and I thought that they go to the ocean to spawn. Most of the info I have is gathered from what I've read on the net, therefore is not concrete. It'd be nice if we can get info that is reliable in regards to the breeding of this species. any enlightenment is appreciated, just don't cus me out :) :lol2:
