I work for an online cichlid dealer, and one of our suppliers just brought in 100 2-3 in ATF's about 1.5-2 months ago. I'm sure other importers brought some in as well.

I saw about 100 over at Rarefish as well. Same size. But where did they came from? Throw a big net in the river and catch all of the little ones? or were they bred in a farm?

Thanks in advance :)

Fangs, are you sure there is no mass breeding? I am asking because the one's that came in lately were a big influx of 2-3 inch fish, I mean BIG influx, HUGE. I thought that they might be farm raised, and I ask that how can it be done knowing that these fish swims in big rivers with fast flowing waters, and I thought that they go to the ocean to spawn. Most of the info I have is gathered from what I've read on the net, therefore is not concrete. It'd be nice if we can get info that is reliable in regards to the breeding of this species. any enlightenment is appreciated, just don't cus me out :) :lol2:

 Sure, they have been bred in the past, by a doctor in Japan and maybe a few others (not sure), but I haven't heard of any being bred recently. It is possible, but I haven't heard anything about it.
I've heard that they are easy to catch along the river banks with nets (seigns).

Here in Japan the word is that until recently no one was willing to go into the depths of the jungle to collect these fish, as for goliath the collection place is usually congo and until recently fighting has prevented any collections taking place. As for there being bred ATF's ,at the moment I believe it to be very unlikely, when these fish are collected they are ussually done in numbers and all the ATF's comming into Japan are wild caught.

There has been a very high demand lately for monster fish, 10 years ago you could not buy a tank 100+ gallons without special ordering it, now stores keep up to 150g in their regular stocks.

Times change, people discovered monster fishes and large aquariums, more demand means more fish like ATF show up on the market. Same goes for regular, saltwater systems...trend now is toward large systems.

Simple really.

Part of the reason for the small sizes is shipping cost. A box of fish is going to cost the same to ship no matter what's inside. Not sure on the exact #'s for ATF's, but you can ship 30 2-3" fish in a box, or 5 6-8" fish. It makes sense to ship the smaller fish as the cost per fish is much cheaper, and the opportunity for profit is larger.
