I disagree. 33 gal (3'x16"x18" ?!?) is only suitable for a species tank ONLY!

33gal is suitable for a specie only colony. Believe me, you'll get more "natural" behavior of the fish, a lot of spawns, and you'll be able to keep your fish happy. My suggestion is a dozen of either P. Saulosi, or L. Caeruleus. If you can buy adults, if not, then buy a larger group of juvies and trade the extra males in. In that 33 gal, 1-2 males, 10 females would make a very fun setup.

Absolutely...you'll never keep the species suggested initially successfully to adulthood in that size tank.

A group of saulosi or labs if you must have mbuna would be ok - presuming heavy filtration. The saulosi might attract you because you have two colours within the same species on a male/female divide. And to be honest, a 40G breeder would still be a better size.

But a shed load of zebras etc. is going to lead to unhappy and dead fish and unhappy you, if you are planning on maintaining the 33 past grow out size.

im thinkin i might get some Pseudotropheus saulosi and eventually a pair of Synodontis multipunctatus

Get a larger group and trade in extra males, you should end up with 8-12 fish (preferably, 2m/females the rest)

S. Multipunctatus are colony catfish; they are absolutely phenomenal in groups, so I'd go for 6-10 minimum. That would be a nice mix indeed.
