Hello! never posted in this section before since I have concentrate me on Sa/Ca cichlids but it´s now time to learn about africans wich I don´t know much about.

My q is: wich malawis or tangs can live in a hex ( approx. 55g )?
and who can´t live in such a tank?

If I kiss my father in laws A##:naughty: I may be getting his tank and I hope I can make it an african themed tank with anubias and some rocks. And I dont intend to mix tang and malawi.

Teach me everything I need to know please!

A 55 hex is tall and the footprint of the tank will keep you away from many Africans so I would suggest dwarf mbuna such as demasoni for malawian or maybe if you go tang you could try some neolamp. brichardi. A regular 55 gallon would open you up to many more species because it has more surface area but you cant beat a free tank.

thanks for the suggestions. I will look into the species you´ve mentioned, but aren´t neolamprologus species the small stripey fishes that lives in colonys in the wild?

i think your tank would look amazing with like rocks piled all the way to the top, shells everywhere with like 20 neolamprolgus brevis and like 6 masked julies. throw a couple of bristlenose in for cleanup and rook the anubis all over the rocks.

that would look amazing.

I have a standard 55 and that just seems too small for my mbuna, or most malawis. i do have the brevis in a 28 gallon bowfront and they are hella fun to watch.

yes, your Idea with the rocks and the anubia sounds real nice. I know of N.brevis and they are a cool fish but I want little more colours in the tank.

There are other shellies.

look at these to help. I would say do a tall pile of rocks up the middle with little caves and attach plants. Also hook shells to the pile it would look great!

I would recommend shellie comps too. I love my guys.

A 55 gallon hex is too small for a group of yellow labs IMO. I think it is too small for any Mbuna. Shellies will be a good choice.

A friend of mine kept 50 adult mbuna in a 60 gallon hex. Did a rockpile about half way up in the middle with lots of cracks and caves and it worked like a charm. He had heavy filtration and did huge weekly water changes. They spawned like mad in that tank. Lots of live food since he couldn't be bothered to take the rocks out and most of they fry were prolly hybrids anyways....
