There's probably a 50/50 chance of it working. I keep anubias with my mbuna, but they demolished vallisneria. Some people have done java fern as well.

Depends on the plant. You can sometimes get away with anubias and java fern, but they can tear up some others.
Depends more upon the fish rather than the plants. Some african cichlids ingore plants. Some will eat the new growth. Some will tear them up.
My Africans even tear out the fake plants that I try to keep in there. I tried actual plants with them years ago but I was constantly having to replant them after they uprooted them.
mine dig wayyyyy too much to even try live plants, unless i tied them down to rocks. i just keep fake plants in there and every now and then have to replant them. but anubis would be the best bet if you were to try
