That's the compromise I came up with my wife. She has a Afircan Cichlid tank and I have my American Cichlid tank. Now she wants to go bigger but that can only happen if I can get a bigger tank too. I love it! It's a win-win situation for me.

Americans, no contest. Africans were my first fish, I got them when I was about 3-4 years old (my dad took care of my tank then, of course :)). I kept them for about 2 years and got a decent amount of enjoyment out of them... until I discovered that there were so many other fish available that would be 10x as cool/interesting, and since then, I have never, and probably will never own them again (except possibly a few of the larger species, like frontosas). Basically, if they can't entertain a toddler, I don't see how they could possibly entertain a teen/adult. :D

I have both and I keep my African display tank in the living room along with my puffer. People seem to love them and its a good conversation piece. I just recently move my s/a tank to the living room and it seems guys are a lot more attracted to them because they are meaner. I have my GT separated from my JD and Texas and it constantly attacks the plexy glass trying to get to them. But I love both, with Africans you get such a vibrant mix of colors along with the fact that per gallon you can comfortably keep more fish... But sa/ca are just fun... Its hard to choose for me they all have something I really like :]
