africans with an oscar?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
they have different water parameters and diet needs. no, it wouldnt work.

Depends on type and size of Africans vs. size and temperment of oscar. Some people on here do it with varying degrees of success. When I tried it the oscar made short work of the Africans.

Whooooooooooooooooooooooa...................................there is no textbook explanation..."africans" is too broad. Large haps, fronts, etc may work if you are going for the whole mixed thing. I have seen people mix pbass with fronts on this forum. Size is relative...

yeah i agree-im thinking mbuna (lake malawi) because thats what i keep.. a larger hap with the same diet may work, but youd have to research a few haps and just see.

Keep in mind if you maintain a high ph for your africans the oscar might live but wont do well in it.

I heard also that the body language/coloration signals on new world (south american cichlids) and africans is oppisit on most things. The submission signal for a new world is the same as the signal "i want to go another round cause i think i can take ya." in african speak. I also think the fish can sense when a non african is in the tank and they attack it. I tried to put a wimpy flowerhorn into my haps and peacock tank (did all the righ things for intro new fish) and they despised that fish, had to remove him with in an hour or so. None of my haps are that aggressive and can even be with fronts. I put a new african in and its meet and greet with attitude then back to normal. so there might be something to the body language/coloration rumors. Just my own expriences on that.

O and small ACs...no

O and large Haps....maybe

parms. will play a big role.

large haps like for example the venustus would probably destroy the O,
they are quite aggressive
