africans with an oscar?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i tried putting a malawi (not sure about the exact name) tiny compared to the oscar. i have plenty hides but the cichlid doesnt use it they getting along perfectly. my oscar has never shown any signs of aggresion to any other tank mate.???

Definetely no if the mix is oscars with mbunas, considering diet, water parameters, and fish size. But I agree on it possibly working with haps, perhaps eye-biters or something?

I would be concerned about the ability of the oscar to defend itself when needed. Smaller faster, more agile fish will OWN an Oscar in no time if they're quick enough. The Oscar can be huge but it won't matter in such a situation, it could get picked on until it becomes stressed and sick.

Just a thought I wanted to put out there. Personally I wouldn't do it, and the pH may very well affect the O too

When I was a kid I put a blue Mbuna in with a couple of oscars. The oscars were about 7 inches long. This guy was may 2.5 or 3. He beat the crap out of them. They could not get close to messing with him. It was like throwing a ninja into a middle aged beginner Karate class. After maybe 3 days I had to take the Mbuna back.

The Mbuna is much more aggressive, faster, and smaller. Tank raised O's are much more interested in the next meal than anything else. Tank raised Africans are still hyper aggressive...

considering diet..... my Oscar and Mbuna both eat Hikari, never did any fish harm, I had a BIG pair of Oscars in with Mbuna no probs (things like Labs and Red/Blue Zebs), that was for a year+ in a 5x2x2... so..... can it work? YES!

would I do it again? NO..... it just looks wrong to me now I no more about African fish.

it just depends on how you feel and what you think. and if your willing to sacrifice a few or all the fish. just depends. some people do put them together and some dont. it is widely recommended that you dont. but you are your own person and if you are strong willed like soem then your gonna try it any way b/c its what u want to do and it might just work. it just depends on oscars personalites really. it is really hard to tell

I tried it, oscars are really unpredictable, that's all I can tell you. The one was left with no fins, pound for pound africans are more aggressive than oscars. Oscars get bloody huge, they can snap your typical hap in half. but yeah the main thing is that they tend to be really unpredictable, I have had oscars who were totally friendly towards everything and then just kill a fish with no warning.
