So has anyone here ever kept SA/CA with African fish? Is it possible for the fish to thrive with such different pH requirements? Am I nuts in thinking this :screwy: ??

I know that fish are pretty good at adapting to whatever water parameters that they live in, but these fish do have pretty different requirements. I was wondering as I think it could result in a very cool looking mix. :headbang2

Any info would be much appreciated... :feedback:

Not a good idea.

Water parameters should be significantly different to meet the needs of old world and new world cichlids.

Different temperaments could result in injuries or deaths.

Different types of habitats would be needed for each type of fish.

As for the looks of the fish together, that is your opinion, but I would prefer to keep it one or the other. Hell, I won't even mix my africans if they are from different lakes.

Good luck in making your decision, but I think that in the interest of your fish it wouldn't be a good idea.

I use to keep a 2" yellow Zebra Cichlid with various juvinile American Cichlids. After about a year the Zebra had reached 6". The Zebra came from my freinds 225 gallon tank where he bred them. My Zebra I had was 2-3" bigger then his brothers and sisters after one year of being raised in a 125 gallon. My pH was 7.2 where as my freinds was maintained at 8.0. When I returned the Zebra to my freinds tank it was far more aggressive then his other Africans so I eventually had to take the little devil back.

I have lots of tanks set up that way....... they are not as pickey about water chem as they are about water quality. Remember that you can keep almost anything with anything else if you give them enough room.

As for the mix it looks good but I would recomend choosing fish with the same temperment. I have red terrors, green terrors, zebras, red devil/midas, bumble bee cichlids (don't remember what they are),cat fish, polypomus, sevrum, and a head stander just to name a few in my 265gal and everything is fine.

My ph is 7.8 so I do have that going for me.... could you do it in 7.2ph? don't know

those are all cichlidkeeping myths, that should be completely disregarded

African cichlids and American cichlids make for excellent tankmates. The only thing you should watch out for are Tanganyikan tropheus, as these are prone to suffering bloat, especially when fed blatantly high protein diets

I had a mixed tank just be careful and make sure that you maintaqin the tank and watch for anything unusual. Worked fine for me.

I use Zebra's and rostatus for dithers with Vieja an R/D's.
They breed all the time.

It's all about the love for mixed species. :hearts:

I've never seen a mixed tank and in the past I have always stuck to keeping similar fish together. Seems interesting to me though. Glad to hear that it's worked for a lot of you in the past.
