30 gallons IS NOT ALOT OF ROOM. if its small enough that the firemouth is already claiming the entire tanks free swimming room to himself it will only get worse with time. as they get bigger they get meaner and want more space.........

Not to mention FMs are extremely territorial, and if it sees the whole tank as his then life will become miserable for your convict.

I had a similar problem. But I have a 150g and the firemouth was chasing everything in the tank. He eventually killed the female fiemouth and one of my tinfoil barbs. the only one he really didn't mess with was my Albino Oscar . And I think thats because the Albino wasn't going to stand for any of that. Anyway, I had to move him into his own tank and I'm actually thinking of giving him away. He's a beautiful fish but I can't seem to keep him in a tank with anything else.

i recommend taking that rock pile off the back wall and putting it out where it blocks view from 1 side of the tank to the other, less line of sight = less aggression due to lack of tank size.

I have a male firemouth like this too, hes a BEAST, he stands up to my red devil and sometimes punks him down lol

Well i sold the firemouth today back to the petstore so now theres only the one covict left. Im just going to get another convict and call the tank done.

I've got a convict and firemouth. Same issue. But eventually the convict adapted, and learned how to handle herself. They are tough little fish, and firemouths are all bard and no bite. She'll learn to stand up for herself.
