Aggression With Angels

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wish I knew how to properly sex them. The black one is staying in a corner on the far side of the tank away from everything else. The other two were lip locking then the smoke angel started trying the beat up on the koi. Charging, biting his side while the koi just tried to get away and hide.

It is probably a male trying to be the dominant fish and the others figuring out their ranks. I saw this behavior in a group of five when a big male paired up with a female. I found that the weakest one was heavily bullied by everyone and was in need of a tank to himself. The other four have a little aggression by not much.

angels with koi?

I'm going to guess koi angelfish.

It's all hormones, they have reached sexual maturity and have to sort out the pecking order and gets who. What size is the tank?

Sexing angels is not easy. You can 'best-guess' them within a long established group. The females will appear more plump than the males. If they're getting ready to pair up and spawn then, their genital papillae (spawning tubes) will extend:

Based on that picture it looks like the smoke angel is a male with his tube showing. I did notice that today. So maybe they're trying to pair off.

Sound like they are playing dating game for pairing up. Most of the time they know their limit. I rarely seen them fight with each other so bad that they may loose eye or broken tail or even death. Keep your eyes on them. When it come close to that point you may separate them.

It looks like everyone has calmed down now. Everyone looked fine this morning. Hopefully two of them will pair off though. That would be great.
